Observing Perseids

On Sunday, August 11, observation of Perseids will be organized at Beli Kamen near Prokuplje, at the foot of the Vidojevica mountain where the Vidojevica Astronomical Station is located. The event is organized by AOB and the Astronomical Society Alfa from Niš. The Perseids, a meteor shower that stretches along the orbit of the comet Swift-Tuttle, is one of the most famous because of the potentially large number of meteors that can be seen from mid-July to late August, with the peak activity on the night between August 11 and 12, when it is possible to see dozens or even hundreds of meteors per hour. They got their name from the constellation Perseus in which their radiant is located, which is a small region on the celestial sphere from which meteor trajectories seem to emanate.

For astronomy lovers who are not able to come to the event at Beli Kamen and watch the falling meteors, which usually last from one to several seconds, we have uploaded an image from all-sky camera at the ASV. The snapshot shows an image of the sky that is updated in real time.
