The next Colloquium of the Astronomical Observatory will be held on Friday, February 7, at 11 AM in the Library.
Speaker: Tuğba Erol, Erciyes University, Astronomy and Space Department, Türkiye
Topic: Projection Effects in Determination of the Merger Time in Shell Galaxies with Illustris TNG
Resume: Stellar shells are faint, arc-like structures found in various types of galaxy. They are likely formed through mergers where the galaxies orbit each other. The distance from the centre of the galaxy is important for working out the time of the merger, as outer shells show the lower limit. But shell visibility and measured radii change depending on the lines of sights, meaning some shells remain hidden. Using the Illustris TNG50 simulation, we analyse how orientation affects shell distance measurements and merger time estimates by observing galaxies from nine different lines of sights.
The talk will be recorded and posted on the Observatory's Youtube channel.
